Decontamination requirements of HTM 01 05
HTM 01-05 - Decontamination in primary care dental practices – gives best practice guidance on decontamination within a primary care dental practice; it superseded the BDA document A12 and is part of the Department of Health HTM 01 series of documents on decontamination of medical devices.
The legal framework of decontamination (reprocessing) of medical devices, including dental instruments, will be reviewed, together with supporting European and International standards. The science behind these requirements will be highlighted and compared with the UK guidance in HTM 01-05. The essential points of cleaning and sterilization will be emphasised.
Aims and Objectives: Clarification of the hierarchy of decontamination policy; overview of the practical considerations of decontamination of medical devices; how to comply with legal obligations; sterilization and cleaning science and practice.

Richard Bancroft, Development and Technical Service Director,
Albert Browne Ltd, a subsidiary of STERIS Corporation
Richard Bancroft is the Development and Technical Service Director for Albert Browne Ltd. He has 25 year’s experience in the field of sterilization, and is a Registered Authorising Engineer (Decontamination) in the UK and has a BSc Honours Degree in Chemistry. He is a member of National (BSI (UK), AAMI (US)), International (ISO) and European (CEN) Standards Committees and has represented the UK on many occasions as a UK technical expert in the drafting of many CEN and ISO standards for sterilizers, washer-disinfectors and sterilization. He is the Convenor of ISO TC198 WG 6 (Chemical Indicators) responsible for the drafting of the ISO 11140 series of standards.
