Patient adherence with oral health related advice is important. However patients often neglect to follow such advice. This lecture will outline a model of patient adherence with three elements: Memory or recall of the advice; Understanding of the advice; Effectiveness of interpersonal communication. For each element techniques to improve that element will be outlined.
Biography
Tim Newton is Professor of Psychology as Applied to Dentistry at King’s College London Dental Institute and leads the Education & Environment Research theme. Tim Newton has worked in the behavioural sciences in relation to dentistry for the last 19 years, and his particular interests include self-perceived oral health and quality of life, the working life of the dental team and patients’ perceptions of treatment. He has published over 200 peer reviewed journal articles on various topics including: stress and the dental profession, workforce planning in dentistry, and patients’ perceptions of the process and outcome of treatment. In 2007 he received the Giddon Award for distinguished research in the behavioural sciences. In 2008 with his colleagues Koula Asimakopoulou and Suzanne Scott, he founded the United Kingdom’s first Health Psychology Service for people who are dentally anxious. He has lectured throughout the World at numerous academic conferences and short courses on topics related to dentistry.
