CPD Developments for Dental Nurses

The GDC Scope of Practice identifies many additional skills that dental nurses could develop during their careers, but it is important that these skills are acquired together with a comprehensive understanding of underpinning principles and evidence. At UCLan, the Institute of Postgraduate Dentistry is committed to development of the entire dental team and is therefore going to offer a range of educational opportunities that will allow dental nurses to acquire additional skills, together with University credits.

Programmes to be offered from September 2011 will include a short course in Infection Control for dental nurses who may take the lead in this area for their practice and a module on minor surgery and implant nursing. Also available will be an enhanced practice module which will incorporate the skills of intra-oral photography, shade taking and placing a rubber dam, together with issues of professional practice and communication skills. A BSc in Dental Nursing, available to qualified dental nurses, is a vision for the future.

Registration has brought dental nurses a huge opportunity to develop their practice, skills and knowledge to degree level and IPDE wants to provide an environment that will allow Dental nurses to achieve their full potential.
