Removable Orthodontics for the general dental laboratory
The lecture will contain an overview of established and current pressure/ vacuum, thermoformed appliance manufacture. I will be highlighting a cross section of appliances that are manufactured using this technique and other non thermoformed techniques. Some examples of thermoformed appliance application that will be covered, will be, Thermoformed retainers and their various modifications.
This will include clasp based as well as non clasp based retainers. Mouth guards for sports usage. I will be highlighting a range of thermoformed appliances used to treat patients with OSA, (obstructive sleep apnoea). Tooth whitening has recently become a massive growth area in dentistry. As a result, so has the demand for custom made bleaching trays. I will be showing a method for manufacturing custom made bleaching trays and the materials used.
Also I will be looking at fabrication and materials used for manufacture of special trays, splints and custom packaging of finished appliances. The purpose of this lecture will be to inform and educate the audience about the wide variety of applications, materials and manufacturing processes available to the Orthodontic/ Dental Technician when using a Vacuum or pressure forming machine. Also contrasting these against conventional techniques.
Biography

MR PAUL MALLETT BSc (Hons), FOTA, MIMPT, MDTA.
Maxillofacial Laboratory Manager.
In 1979 started technical career in specialist Orthodontic commercial Laboratory and in 1992 took up a post in the NHS, and is now Maxillofacial laboratory manager for University Hospitals of Morecambe bay NHS Trust. He was Associate lecturer at the Manchester Metropolitan University’s Certificate and Diploma Postgraduate courses in Orthodontic Technology. Served as Secretary of the OTA (UK), and as President for the DTA. Has also served as co-opted DCP member on the GDC’s registration committee and continues to lecture extensively at national and international conferences and seminars.
