Career Progression for Dental Nurses
Over the past few years the opportunities for Dental Nurses to expand and diversify their skills base has increased. Many Dental Nurses now hold a variety of additional qualifications which build on the initial qualification which allowed them to register with the General Dental Council (GDC).
More programmes are now available via distance and blended learning which improves access for Dental Nurses.
These opportunities can be in dentistry - such as expanding their knowledge with a recognised qualification in specialist areas such as orthodontics, oral health promotion or in allied areas such as teaching, IT and management.
This session will hopefully give Dental Nurses the chance to explore the variety of routes available for them to develop their existing expertise.
Biography
Mabel Slater MBE
I have been involved with Dental Care Professional (DCP) education for many years. Originally I qualified as a Dental Nurse, then became a Dental Hygienist and eventually moved into teaching. Studying for my Masters degree in Education led to me becoming the DCP Director at King’s College in London (KCL).
I am currently a registrant member of the General Dental Council (GDC) and also work with the FGDP for the RCS (England). In the past I’ve also been Chair of the FGDP DCP Group. I have received a number of Awards, including the MBE and the Leatherman Award - all of which are connected to my work with dentistry and dental education.
