Dr Didier Dietschi received his license in 1984 and his DMD degree in 1988 from the University of Geneva as well as a PhD degree in Biomaterials Science in 2003. As of 1984 he has been teaching at the university where he has served as assistant, senior assistant, senior lecturer and co-director in the department of Operative Dentistry and Endodontics since 1984. He is also professor in the department of Comprehensive Care at CASE Western University in Cleveland, USA. Dr Dietschi maintains a private office dedicated to Restorative Aesthetic Dentistry and co-authored the book “Adhesive Metal-free Restorations” which was translated into 7 languages. Dr Dietschi is an internationally acclaimed speaker and has given hundreds of lectures worldwide.
In addition to 20 years clinical experience in practising and teaching adhesive and aesthetic dentistry, Dr Dietschi has thoroughly studied the fundamental and clinical aspects of adhesive restorations and chemical treatments of discolourations. He will be one of the speakers at The Dentistry Show 2012 with a lectured titled ‘Conservative restoration of aesthetics and function in patients with severe tooth wear’ as he elaborates:
Tooth wear represents a frequent pathology with multifactorial origins. Behavioural changes, unbalanced diet, various medical conditions and medications inducing acid regurgitation or influencing saliva composition and flow rate, trigger tooth erosion. Awake and sleep bruxism, which are widespread nowadays with functional disorders, induce attrition. This is why it has become increasingly important to diagnose early signs of tooth wear. A proper occlusal and anatomical scheme, as well as a pleasing smile line, is usually set on models with an anterior teeth or full mouth waxup, depending on the severity of tissue loss.
Based on a new Vertical Dimension of Occlusion (VDO), combinations of direct and indirect restorations can then help to re-establish anatomy and function. The use of adhesive techniques and resin composites has proven its potential, in particular for the treatment of moderate tooth wear. The lecture will present recent knowledge and clinical concepts dealing with the various forms of early restorative interventions and their potential to restrict ongoing tissue destruction.
In my presentation I will start by showing one or two cases where dentists can become puzzled as a full prosthetic treatment is not an option. We will develop the presentation with ‘thinking’ topics, presenting cases with increasing complexity. There will be an overview of patients presenting various forms of wear and the specific treatments they received. This is then a subject that covers a really broad area, embracing multiple restorative procedures.
Severe wear is becoming more and more present in our society and it is encouraging to know that the results obtained with conservative adhesive techniques are positive in terms of longevity and patient’s comfort. I therefore hope I can show delegates some options that they will consider useful in their practice.
Dr Dietschi will be appearing at The Dentistry Show 2012, where he will share with delegates his understanding of how the rhythm of life can lead to tooth destruction. Dr Dietschi is joining an array of speakers from all over the world.
