New voices and innovative inspiration on the key role of hygienists in practice

The Dentistry Show 2012 will provide a wide range of demonstrations, debates and discussions from infection protection to enhancing patient adherence.  This year’s show looks set to be the biggest and best yet.

With the distinct move toward ethical dentistry firmly in motion, the drive in modern practice is towards preventative and aesthetics, asking the question of what is best for the patient.  Hygienists are playing their part in successful practice and this year’s the show will host a variety of seminars and presentations especially for dental hygienists.  From pre and post procedure care to advice on educating patients, the show aims to leave no stone unturned.

The 2012 Dentistry Show will be concentrate on educating delegates, promoting and enabling higher standards within practices across the UK.  The Symposium includes areas of core CPD for hygienists and therapists such as ethical issues through to the latest thinking in patient management and treatment modalities, as well as providing the opportunity to ask further questions on the topics.

Sally Simpson, President of the British Association of Dental Hygienists and Therapists (BSDHT) says the BSDHT will be attending for the first time this year and she is excited about, “meeting with the wider dental profession to increase our visibility and promote the aims of the BSDHT and benefits of membership.”

New functionality has been added to the event website to enable online networking, and allow participants to see who has registered to attend, message colleagues and friends, and arrange to meet up at the show.  Onsite visitors will be able to print a personal onsite exhibitor list, making visiting relevant spots on the show floor based on the products and services areas of interest easier than ever before. 

The Dentistry Show is one the finest opportunities to witness live procedures of some of the latest methods in dentistry.  The very popular ‘Live Theatre’ will be running again where procedures including Implant Surgery, Whitening and Botulinum Toxin will be performed.

There will be a chance for hygienists to experience the latest innovations in the dentistry business over the forthcoming year, looking at key areas such as customer service, patient care and management systems.  Dr Anousheh Alavi will deliver a talk titled ‘Periodontal Health – Introducing a periodontal care pathway’ and Julie Burke will discuss patient health and safety in her presentation ‘Medical Emergencies – Are you ready?’

Professor Stephen Challacombe’s ‘The Challacombe Scale: Quantifying severity and assessing the effectiveness of treatment of Xerostromia’ looks set to inform hygienists of an interesting way to approach an age-old ailment.  Dr Richard Charon will look at the human aspects of patient care in his presentation ‘You and your anxious patients (inhalation sedation, scope of practice and you).

Carmel Maher’s ‘Infection prevention and control – Hand hygiene and personal protection for hygienists and therapists’ will discuss the potential pitfalls of everyday practice whilst Mhari Coxon’s ‘How to implement change in your clinical style’ will assist hygienists to hone their variety of skills in-surgery.

Mhari Coxon, is chairing  the session for hygienists and therapists that will look at their role in prevention and implementation, non-surgical aspects of advanced periodontal treatment, dealing with nervous patients, and those suffering from xerostomia; “ This is the first time that there will be live theatre for hygienists which is very exciting. We’ve got some fantastic speakers, new faces, new voices and we’ll be looking at the key role therapists and hygienists have to play in relationships with patients, and in being at the hub of the practice. ”

Professor Tim Newton’s ‘Enhancing patient adherence’ is guaranteed to help find ways to ensure patient support.  Dr Matt Perkins will demonstrate first hand some key features of periodontal therapy with a section titled ‘Periodontist with live theatre practical.’  Professor Nicola West’s presentation ‘Implants, how to care form probe clean, and deal with peri-implants periodontics’ looks set to share an eclectic overview of hygienist duties.

The impressive caliber of speakers, new faces and voices will give The Dentistry Show an exciting edge, particularly the live theatre for hygienists which is ground breaking.  Hygienists and therapists are at the hub of dental practices and play a key role in patient relationships and retention with the emphasis on prevention, a role that will increase as time goes on.

Sally Reid of the British Association of Dental Therapists (BADT) says, “The Dentistry Show will give BADT an opportunity to speak with our members, outline the benefits of employing a therapist in practice and update ourselves on new products.”

The obstacles and changes facing dentistry and every member of the team will be top of the agenda at the Dentistry Show, and the Future Dentist programme looks set to be a lively debate involving some of the industry’s big hitters.  With the private dentistry market predicted to be worth an extra £1billion within the next year, these are exciting times for all dental workers which is what the Dentistry Show is all about.
